Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the surgery that modifies the shape of the nose and is one of the most frequently performed procedures in plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or dorsum, narrow the nostrils, or alter the angle between the nose and the upper lip. It also corrects congenital issues, trauma, and some breathing problems. If you are considering undergoing rhinoplasty, you will receive basic information about the surgery, when it is indicated, how it is performed, and what results can be expected. However, it is impossible for all your questions to be answered, as they largely depend on personal factors and the preferences of the plastic surgeon. If you don't understand something, consult with your plastic surgeon.

Surgery

Before a rhinoplasty and result. Rhinoplasty is always performed in the operating room, within a clinic or hospital. Normally, you stay in the clinic the night after surgery, and are discharged the next day.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia plus sedation, or more commonly, general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your surgeon’s preferences. If it is performed with local anesthesia plus sedation, the patient feels relaxed and the nose and its surroundings are insensitive to pain; With general anesthesia the patient is asleep during the operation.

A rhinoplasty usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours, although in complex cases it may take longer. During surgery, the skin of the nose is separated from its support, made up of bone and cartilage, which is sculpted into the desired shape. Finally the skin is redistributed over this new support. Many plastic surgeons perform this procedure from inside the nose, making small incisions inside the nostrils; Others prefer to do an open rhinoplasty, especially for more complex cases, in which a small incision is made in the columella.

When the surgery is completed, a cast of plaster or other material is placed, which will help maintain the new shape of the nose. Nasal plugs are also placed in both nostrils to prevent bleeding and stabilize the nasal septum.

Are there risks? Are there guarantees?

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and of little importance. However, there are always possibilities of complications, such as infection, nosebleeds, or reactions to anesthesia. Risks can be minimized by carefully following the instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after surgery. Sometimes, small red dots may appear on the skin after surgery, which are broken blood vessels; they are generally very small but permanent. There are no issues related to scars, as the incisions are inside the nose; even in open rhinoplasty, the scar is imperceptible. Approximately, in 1 out of 10 cases, a surgical revision may be necessary to correct minor defects. These cases are unpredictable and can occur even in patients of the most experienced plastic surgeons.

The results

During the first days after surgery, when the face is swollen and bruised, it's easy to forget that our appearance will improve, and many patients may feel somewhat depressed; it's a normal feeling. Day by day, the appearance improves, and the patient begins to feel happier. In 1 or 2 weeks, it won't seem like you've undergone surgery. Improvement is progressive and gradual, although minimal swelling may persist, especially at the tip, for a few months. The final result is achieved in approximately 1 year.
