Abdominoplasty

Abdominal plastic surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is an aesthetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the shape and appearance of the abdomen.

During an abdominal plastic surgery, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen. The connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) is typically tightened using sutures as well. The remaining skin is repositioned to create a more toned appearance.

You may choose to undergo abdominal plastic surgery if you have excess fat or skin around the belly button area or a weakened lower abdominal wall. Abdominal plastic surgery can also enhance your body image.

Why is it done?

There are several reasons why you may have excess fat, reduced skin elasticity, or weakened connective tissue in the abdomen. These include the following:

● Significant weight changes
● Pregnancy
● Abdominal surgery, such as a cesarean section
● Aging
● Your natural body type

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, can remove excess skin and fat and strengthen weak fascia. It can also address stretch marks and excess skin below the navel. However, abdominoplasty does not address stretch marks outside this area.

Abdominoplasty can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures for body contouring, such as breast surgery. If you have had abdominal fat removed through liposuction, you might choose to undergo abdominoplasty because liposuction removes tissue just beneath the skin and fat but not excess skin.

Abdominoplasty is not suitable for everyone. Your doctor might advise against abdominoplasty if:

● You plan to lose a significant amount of weight
● You may consider future pregnancy
● You have a serious chronic condition, such as heart disease or diabetes
● Your body mass index is over 30
● You smoke
● You've had previous abdominal surgery that resulted in significant scar tissue.

Do risks exist? Are there guarantees?

Every year, hundreds of successful abdominoplasties are performed. When carried out by a qualified plastic surgeon, the results are usually very good. However, as with any surgery, there are risks and complications associated with this particular procedure. Complications after surgery, such as infection or venous thrombosis, can occur but are rare. Infections can be resolved with antibiotics and drainage, but they may prolong the hospital stay. Venous thrombosis can be prevented by moving the legs and getting up as soon as the surgery allows. Poor healing can result in a low-quality scar that may sometimes require a second surgery. Smokers should quit smoking a few weeks before surgery and be warned that smoking increases the likelihood of complications and delays healing. The risk of complications can be reduced by carefully following the instructions given by your plastic surgeon before and after surgery, especially those related to when to resume physical activity.

The results

Abdominoplasty, whether full or mini, provides excellent results in patients with weakened abdominal muscles and excess skin and fat. In most cases, the results are permanent, as long as accompanied by a balanced diet and regular exercise. If you are realistic in your expectations and can tolerate the presence of a definitive, though concealable, abdominal scar and a lengthy recovery period, abdominoplasty may be suitable for you.
