Otoplasty or Ear Surgery

Otoplasty is the surgery performed to reposition prominent or "bat ears" to a more normal position, closer to the head, or to reduce the size of large ears. Typically, this surgery is performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14. Otoplasty can also be done on adults, with no significant increase in risks at this age.

If you or your child is considering undergoing otoplasty, you will receive basic information about the surgery, when it is indicated, how it is performed, and what results can be expected. However, it is impossible to address all your questions, as they largely depend on personal factors and the preferences of the plastic surgeon. If you don't understand something, consult with your plastic surgeon.

Other ear problems

In addition to prominent ears or "protruding" ears, there are other problems that can also be solved with surgery. These include pinched ear and cupped ear. Elongated earlobes and torn earlobes can also be surgically improved. The plastic surgeon is also able to create a new ear when you are born without it (microtia) or when it is lost due to trauma.

The surgery

Otoplasty typically lasts between 2 and 3 hours, although in complex cases, it may take longer. The technique employed depends on the specific problem. Generally, a small incision is made on the back of the ear to expose the auricular cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and folded back; internal stitches may be used to maintain the new shape. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove a portion of the cartilage to achieve a more natural ear shape. Finally, a wedge of skin from the back of the ear is removed. The resulting scar from otoplasty is discreetly hidden behind the ear. Most of the time, even if only one ear appears abnormal, both ears are operated on to achieve better symmetry.

Do risks exist? Are there guarantees?

When otoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and of little importance. However, like any other surgery, there are risks inherent to the procedure. A small percentage of patients may develop a hematoma, which may dissolve spontaneously or require drainage. Occasionally, an infection of the cartilage can occur, leading to increased scar tissue in the ear; treatment involves the administration of antibiotics, and in rare cases, surgical drainage may be necessary.

Results

Most patients, both children and adults, feel well within a few hours after surgery, although it may be advisable to stay overnight in the clinic until the effects of the general anesthesia wear off. A bandage is placed around the head immediately after surgery. The ears may be a little sore in the first few days, but this can be easily relieved with medication. In a few days, the bandage is replaced with a lighter one similar to a headband. It is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions regarding the use of the bandage, especially at night. Any activity that may cause the ears to bend should be avoided during the first month.

Most adults return to work 5 days after surgery, while children can go back to school in about 7 days, as long as they are careful with physical activities.
